Ambassador Jones Visits Basrah

On November 25-26, Ambassador Stuart E. Jones visited Basrah to meet with provincial officials, tribal leaders, and energy sector executives. The Ambassador was joined by the U.S. Consul General to Basrah.

During his visit, Ambassador Jones met with Basrah Governor Majid Al-Nasrawi for a wide-ranging discussion of security, economic, and humanitarian assistance challenges facing Iraq. Ambassador Jones emphasized ironclad U.S. support for Iraqis in their fight against ISIL, as well as U.S. efforts to bolster business and investment in southern Iraq. The Ambassador also noted the leading role that the U.S. plays in providing humanitarian relief to Iraqis affected by violence. Since June 2014, the U.S. has provided more than $600 million in humanitarian aid to Iraqis.

Ambassador Jones also met with a group of prominent tribal leaders from southern Iraq to listen to their concerns, reaffirm U.S. resolve in the fight against ISIL, and voice support for efforts toward national reconciliation in Iraq.

Ambassador Jones concluded his visit by marking the American holiday of Thanksgiving over a traditional dinner with U.S. Consulate staff.
