Who may Apply?
The below list defines who may apply to any of our vacancies according to the corresponding “Open To” categories:
- All Interested Applicants / All Sources: This category includes all applicants who are legally eligible to work in Iraq: Iraqi Nationals, Iraqi dual citizen nationals, and Third Country Nationals (only if they already have a valid visa and work permit). Please note that the US Mission in Iraq does not sponsor visa/work permits for Third Country Nationals for vacancies in this “Open To” category.
- Third Country Nationals (TCNs): This category includes citizens from any nationality except Iraqi or U.S. Nationals. The U.S. Mission in Iraq sponsors the visa and work permit of selected candidates for vacancies in this category.
- Current Employees of the Mission: This category refers to the Locally Employed (LE) Staff who signed the Personal Services Agreement (PSA) under the Local Compensation Plan (LCP). Third Party Contractors currently working for the U.S. Mission to Iraq do not fall into this category.
- U.S. Citizen Eligible Family Members (USEFMs): Please refer to this link for a definition of this category.
How to Apply?
Hiring Preference Selection Process
Applicants in the following hiring preference categories are extended a hiring preference in the order listed below. Therefore, it is essential that these applicants accurately describe their status on the application. Failure to do so may result in a determination that the applicant is not eligible for a hiring preference.
HIRING PREFERENCE ORDER:
1. AEFM / USEFM who is a preference-eligible U.S. Veteran*
2. AEFM / USEFM
3. FS on LWOP and CS with reemployment rights **
* IMPORTANT: Applicants who claim status as a preference-eligible U.S. Veteran must submit a copy of their most recent DD-214 (“Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty”), Letter from Veterans’ Affairs which indicates the present existence of a service-connected disability dated within the past six months, equivalent documentation, or certification. A “certification” is any written document from the armed forces that certifies the service member is expected to be discharged or released from active duty service in the armed forces under honorable conditions within 120 days after the certification is submitted by the applicant. The certification letter should be on letterhead of the appropriate military branch of the service and contain (1) the military service dates including the expected discharge or release date; and (2) the character of service. Acceptable documentation must be submitted in order for the preference to be given. * This level of preference applies to all Foreign Service employees on LWOP and CS with re-employment rights back to their agency or bureau.

What should I list under “Language” when filling out a job application?
Please make sure that you address your language skills in English, the host country language, and any other languages you have proficiency in.
Do you require a CV/resume?
No, the U.S. Mission in Iraq does not generally accept CVs or Resumes. If a particular vacancy does require a resume, the vacancy will ask for it (applicable to USAID vacancies only).
While filling my job application, on the Document upload stage, I noticed that it listed DD-214 and SF-50 forms as possible documents to upload. What are these, and are they applicable for me?
These forms are only required for USEFM/AEFM applicants. If you are not this category of applicant, you may disregard the DD-214 and SF-50 forms.
How do I know that my job application was submitted successfully?
Once you have submitted your application form, a confirmation window will automatically appear. You will be able to download a copy of your application for your records. You can also track your application status (complete/incomplete) from the ERA Dashboard once you sign in.
I made a mistake in my application. Am I able to edit my job application after I have submitted it?
Yes, you will be able to edit your application until the closing date of the announcement.
Will I have to re-write my job application every time I apply for a new position?
No, your job application is saved in ERA. Make sure you use only one ERA user account to have all of your information saved in once place.
When will I hear back after submitting my job application?
Due to the large volume of applications received, we are unable to contact all applicants who apply for a position. If you do not hear from us within 60 days following the closing date of a vacancy announcement, please assume that your application did not proceed to the next stage of the hiring process.
Can I apply for more than one position at the same time?
Yes. You can apply for as many positions as you are qualified for, and are interested in.
Can I apply for a job at the U.S. Mission if my relative works there?
Yes, you can, so long as there are no nepotism or conflict of interest issues. You must disclose on your online application that you have relatives working at the U.S. Mission Iraq.
How do I know if I’m eligible for a job opening?

I am a dual citizen (Iraqi/American). Would I be considered eligible for the Third County National (TCN) positions you advertise?
No, a TCN may not be a citizen of the United States, nor a citizen of the country to which they are assigned for duty, in this case Iraq.
Are language and skills testing part of the process?
Testing is part of the process. Human Resources will conduct testing for applicants selected by the supervisor to be interviewed.
I have English test results, should I submit them as part of my application?
Yes, if you have English test results from Duolingo, TOEFL, IELTS or TOEIC, from less than 5 years ago, please upload them as part of your application. The results may be considered to allow an applicant to skip the English testing phase. However, English test results are not required in order to have a complete application. Furthermore, the U.S. Mission reserves the right to test applicants if determined it is needed.
