National Conference on Decentralization, with Support from the U.S. Agency for International Development

In remarks delivered at the January 30 National Decentralization Conference, U.S. Ambassador Stuart Jones highlighted the U.S. Government’s efforts, through the Governance Strengthening Project (Taqadum), to assist the Iraqi government in implementing decentralization measures. These measures are part of the Government of Iraq’s commitment to decentralization, as laid out in the Iraqi Constitution and the Provincial Powers Act.

Ambassador Jones also praised Head of the High Commission for Coordination among Provinces Secretariat Dr. Torhan al-Mufti for the continued successes in implementing these measures. In his statement, Ambassador Jones emphasized that “decentralization is important because it gives people a stake in their community’s development and ultimately leads to better services.”
