Rotation of U.S. Military Forces in Iraq

Recent reports of a large number of U.S. troops arriving in Iraq are false.  In the coming weeks, the 101st Airborne Division will replace the 82nd Airborne Division, which is currently stationed in Iraq.  This is part of a normal troop rotation.  The total number of troops in Iraq will remain at approximately 3,500.  The 101st Airborne will perform the same duties as the 82ndAirborne: an advise and train mission.

This troop rotation, as well as all other U.S. military activities in Iraq, such as training, equipment distribution, and arms transfers, is being done in consultation and coordination with the Government of Iraq.
