Security Alert – U.S. Embassy Baghdad, Iraq (September 8, 2018)

Location:   Baghdad, Basrah 

Event:  The United States Mission in Iraq is restricting its movements during the month of Muharram, particularly around the commemoration of Ashura, on Tuesday, September 18 through Friday, September 21 due to expected road closures and unpredictable crowds.

In addition, some protests in Basrah have turned violent, leading to deaths and injuries to protesters and security forces.    U.S. government employees in Basrah are generally avoiding any area where demonstrations could occur, including the Basrah central business district.  

 

Actions to Take:

  • Do not travel to Iraq
  • Avoid crowds
  • Keep a low profile
  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Avoid the Basrah central business district
