Security Message: International Commercial Flight Cessation in Iraq Kurdistan Region (IKR) and Possibility for Domestic Flight Interruptions

U.S. Mission Iraq advises its citizens in Iraq of the announced termination of international flight operations to and from Erbil and Sulaymaniyah airports effective 6:00 p.m. Friday, September 29, 2017.

Please be advised that following the international flight cessation, Baghdad will be the closest international transit point from these airports.  Therefore, if you are in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region (IKR) and need to travel by air out of Iraq via Baghdad after this date, you will be required to have an Iraqi visa.

It is also possible that some domestic flights in Iraq may be affected.  U.S. citizens are therefore advised to review their travel plans.

As a reminder, U.S. citizens should maintain a heightened sense of security awareness and take appropriate measures to enhance their personal security at all times when living and working in Iraq.

Please review the “Iraq Travel Warning” posted on the U.S. State Department’s website:, and remember that U.S. citizens remain at high risk for kidnapping and terrorist violence in Iraq.
