Special Presidential Envoy Brett McGurk Meets with Iraqi Leadership

From December 7 to December 9, Brett McGurk, Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter ISIL, accompanied by U.S. Ambassador Stuart Jones, met with Iraqi leaders in Baghdad, including Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, Speaker of Parliament Salim al-Jabouri, the Governors of Anbar and Mosul, and Syed Ammar Hakim among others. During the meetings, Presidential Envoy McGurk reaffirmed U.S Government support for Iraq in the battle against Da’esh.

In a press conference with Iraqi and international press, Mr. McGurk noted the U.S. is “focused on helping Iraqis succeed, helping this government defeat Da’esh, and helping the Iraqi people reclaim their country from these terrorists.” He also noted that “a fundamental principle of ours is the principle of Iraqi sovereignty, and everything we do here in Iraq is with the consent of the Iraqi government and under our Strategic Framework Agreement.”
