Special Presidential Envoy McGurk Travel to Iraq

From March 15-19, Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter ISIL Brett McGurk, visited Iraq to meet with senior government and security officials, including Iraqi Prime Minister Abadi and Kurdistan Regional Government President Barzani. In his meetings, Mr. McGurk discussed the Coalition’s ongoing support for Iraqi-led efforts to defeat Da’esh, including plans for the further isolation of Mosul, as well as U.S. efforts to help address Iraq’s humanitarian and economic crises, the situation in Syria, and other regional developments.

On March 16, Mr. McGurk delivered remarks on Counter ISIL efforts at the Fourth Annual Sulaimani Forum at the American University of Iraq Sulaimani. While in Sulaymaniyah, Mr. McGurk joined U.S. Ambassador Stuart Jones for separate meetings with Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and Gorran party leaders, in which they discussed economic and political issues, highlighted recent military successes, and thanked the Kurdish officials for their support to people displaced by Da’esh.
