Special Presidential Envoy McGurk Visits Iraq

On January 30 and 31, Special Presidential Envoy Brett McGurk visited Iraq to meet with senior Iraqi government and security officials. Accompanied by U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Stuart Jones, Mr. McGurk met with Prime Minister Abadi, KRG Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani, Anbar Governor Rawi, and other Iraqi leaders to discuss next steps in the campaign, and to congratulate the Iraqi Security Forces on recent successes in the battle against ISIL. Mr. McGurk also underscored the U.S. commitment to supporting the Government of Iraq on post-conflict stabilization in newly liberated areas, as well as efforts to facilitate humanitarian assistance to internally displaced persons and refugees. Discussions also focused on the current economic situation in Iraq, including the IKR, and how the US can provide support. Mr. McGurk noted the positive meetings held today between senior officials from the Government of Iraq and the KRG, and encouraged further cooperation to address the economic situation as well as the coming campaign to liberate Mosul from ISIL terrorists.
