The United States is working with Iraq to improve airport safety. The U.S. Department of State Export Control and Border Security Program (EXBS), in partnership with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, offered training to 47 Iraqi officials from airports around the country on “Low-Technology Threats to Public Transportation”, discussing how to detect and prevent potential attacks on civilian airplanes, including those using devices made from common household items. The training was co-sponsored by Iraq’s Civil Aviation Authority and included attendees from Baghdad, Basrah, Erbil, Sulamania, Najaf and Al-Nasariya airports.
