On August 3rd, Basrah Governor Majid al-Nasrawi welcomed U.S. Consul General Steve Walker, in his first official visit since assuming his duties at the U.S. Consulate General in Basrah.

Consul General Walker expressed appreciation for the opportunity to represent the United States in Iraq’s southern provinces, and affirmed his commitment to advancing economic, commercial, and people-to-people ties between Iraq and the United States. He noted recent steps to advance cooperation between the people of southern Iraq and the United States, highlighting Governor Majid’s signing of a Sister City Agreement between Basrah and Houston, Texas, as well as the recent dedication of U.S. medical equipment provided to the Basrah Children’s Hospital. He also underscored U.S. support for Iraq in its quest to degrade and defeat ISIL.

“I’m very happy to be here in Basrah. Iraq is a very important partner for the United States in this region, and I will work hard to strengthen ties between our two countries. I especially look forward to learning more about the diverse culture of southern Iraq and to meeting its people,” Walker said.
