U.S. Consulate General Celebrates 240th Independence Day

On June 2, the U.S. Consulate General in Erbil hosted distinguished guests including IKR President Massoud Barzani for a celebration of the two hundred and fortieth Independence Day of the United States of America. Ambassador Stuart Jones and Consul General Matthias Mitman welcomed the crowd, which included officials from the Kurdistan Regional Government, military and security officials, business, cultural and civil society leaders and members of the diplomatic community. In his remarks, Ambassador Jones highlighted the strong U.S.-Iraqi partnership, including the recently announced additional $415 million in assistance to the Peshmerga in the fight against Da’esh. The Ambassador also honored those who have lost their lives in the conflict, including Master Sergeant Josh Wheeler, Special Warfare Operator 1stClass Charles Keating IV, and Staff Sergeant Louis Cardin, and over 1,450 brave Peshmerga.
