U.S. Consulate General Erbil Does Not Process Immigrant Visas

The U.S. Consulate General in Erbil wishes to clarify visa processing information following incorrect reporting in some Iraqi media outlets that the Consulate General processes applications for immigrant visas.

The U.S. Consulate General in Erbil does not accept applications for or process immigrant visas. All immigrant visas processing in Iraq is done by the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.  For questions about immigrant visas, which lead to permanent residency in the United States, please visit the U.S. Embassy Baghdad’s website at: https://iq.usembassy.gov/visas/.

The Consulate General does accept applications for a range of nonimmigrant visas for travel to the United States, including visas for tourists, business visitors, students, and temporary workers. Diplomatic and official visas, however, are processed exclusively at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.

Visa applications must be submitted online. Visa interviews are by appointment only and must be scheduled using the online appointment system, which is accessible through the Consulate General’s website.

The U.S. Consulate General in Erbil is not in contact nor has any contacts with travel agencies in terms of preparing the U.S. visa application for applicants or for scheduling visa appointments. We do not consider it necessary to go through travel agencies to prepare the application or to schedule an appointment.  The application form should generally be completed by the applicant, not by a travel agency or other third party. The visa fee is 160.00 USD, and must be paid at a Bank of Baghdad branch.

The Consulate General encourages Iraqi citizens to check its official websitefor more information on visas. Follow the Consulate General’s Facebook page for periodic updates on U.S. visas.
