The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad Condemns the February 19 ISIS Attack near Hawijah

The United States Embassy in Baghdad strongly condemns the ambush and brutal murder of Popular Mobilization Forces members, carried out yesterday by ISIS near Hawijah in Kirkuk Province.

As Prime Minister Abadi has stressed, the fight against ISIS in Iraq is not over. Though the military campaign against ISIS has ended, remnants still cling to ISIS’ twisted ideology and have the capacity and resources to organize attacks that seek to return instability to liberated areas and sow fear among local populations.

At the invitation of the Government of Iraq, the United States and the International Coalition will continue to partner with the Iraqi Security Forces, advising, training, and equipping them to eliminate terrorism as a threat to Iraq.

We extend our sincere condolences to the families of these victims.
