U.S. Embassy hosts a conference regarding Basrah water crisis

Following through on Ambassador Silliman’s recent announcement, the U.S. Embassy hosted key members from the international community who are active in the Basrah water crisis response. DCM Joey Hood opened the event noting, “Many of the solutions to address this crisis will take long-term planning and coordination throughout all levels of government, and the U.S. will support the Government of Iraq at all levels to ensure this process will create benefits for all the citizens of Basrah.”

UNICEF’s Head of Office Peter Hawkins also attended and noted, “This coordination meeting is a first step to consolidating the international support into a coherent and succinct set of steps to aid implementation by the Iraqi government. UNICEF is supporting the Government of Iraq in taking the first steps to help provide safe drinking water to the people of Basra.”
