U.S. Embassy in Baghdad Regrets Violence, Urges Decreasing Tensions

The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad continues to monitor recent protests closely.  The right to demonstrate peacefully is a fundamental right in all democracies, but there is no place for violence in demonstrations from any side.

We regret the loss of life and express our condolences to the families of those killed, and hope for a speedy recovery of security forces and protesters that have been injured.  We call on all sides to reject any resort to violence while exercising restraint.
